Background/Aims: The role of Ena/VASP-like protein (EVL) in gastric cancer carcinogenesis is not clear. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the role of EVL gene promoter hypermethylation in gastric carcinogenesis.
Methods: Twenty gastric cancer tissues, 20 non-tumor tissues around cancers, 10 non-tumor stomach tissues of non-cancer patients were analyzed for EVL promoter methylation using methylation-specific PCR. Clinicopathologic characteristics of gastric cancers were compared according to the EVL promoter methylation status.
Results: EVL promoter methylation was observed in 80.0%, 20.0%, and 70.0% in gastric cancer tissues, non-tumor tissues around cancers, and non-tumor tissues of non-cancer patients. No significant difference in clinicopathologic characteristics was observed between unmethylated and methylated group in gastric cancer patients.
Conclusions: These results suggested that EVL gene promoter hypermethylation may play a role in gastric carcinogenesis as the frequency of methylation in cancer tissues was higher than that of non-tumor tissues around cancers (The Korean Journal of Helicobacter and Upper Gastrointestinal Research 2008;8:38-42)
